How To Be Incredibly Happier
“In the end, it is not the years in your life that count. It is the life in your years.”
I’m always amazed by people who say that they’re unhappy in their lives, and they act as if happiness is a big mysterious force that is difficult to find. Many people struggle for no reason. There’s magic to life. We can always find greats thing in everything. It’s about altering our perspectives. It’s about expanding our mind-set.
So Why Ain’t People Happy?
Many people are controlled by almost impossible rules. Rules are the things that have to happen in order for you to feel upset or great about your experience. Rules define whether your experience is a painful or pleasurable one. When you are happy, your experience meets your expectation as it should be.
How Can You Be Happier?
Based on Unstoppable You™, you have within you everything that creates happiness and fulfillment in your life. Expanding your rules does not mean lowering your standards. It is about raising your standards to enjoy life at its fullest despite of what happens so that you appreciate life even more.
Let’s take a look at “LOVE” as an example. What has to happen in order for you to feel love? Does someone need to tell you that they love you every day? Does someone have to consistently hug you, kiss you and want to make love to you? If so, you are on a fast track to unhappiness.
What’s the highway to love then? For an example, you can decide that you feel love anytime when you tap into an overwhelming love for yourself; anytime you think of a romantic moment; anytime you give love to others; or anytime you treat yourself with a nice thing.
A Messy Desk or a Messy Mind?
” A girl went to her father’s desk. “Daddy, your desk is always so messy.” He looked at his desk which he believed was tidy. “Sweetheart, can you show me what tidy looks like?” She started moving things around for few minutes. “There you go, Daddy. Now, it’s tidy.”
He moved a ruler a centimetre down. “No, Daddy! Now it looks messy again. It needs to go back”. He moved it back before neatly moving a rubber from the top right to bottom right. “No, Daddy! Now it looks messy again. It needs to go back”. He moved it back to its original place before he switched the positions of a pen and a pencil. “No, Daddy! Now it looks messy again. It needs to go back”.
He asked what needs to be done to keep it tidy. She said, “Everything needs to be in the exact position that I just put and nothing is moved”. He asked, “What if I slightly move something as neatly as I can and let other 15 items remain on their current locations?” She answered, “No, Daddy. Everything must remain in its position. Otherwise, it will be messy again”.
He replied, “It is not about the desk that is so messy so easily. It is that you have so many ways that it can be messy but only one way it can be tidy. “
How can you relate this to your life? How many ways that you can feel not so good and how many ways that you can feel great? Sometime we create too many rules to feel bad but only a few rules to feel great.
“People are just happy as they make up their minds to be.”
Your Alternative Rules:
* Be simple and easy for you to meet *
* Depend on what you can control *
* Have no way for you to feel bad *
* Have many ways for you to feel great *
Examples Of Rules In Interesting Areas Of Your Life
Rules: I am happy anytime I smile; anytime I laugh; or anytime I remember something good.
Rules: I am healthy anytime I stand above the ground; anytime I take a deep breath; anytime I drink a glass of water; anytime I eat healthily; or anytime I exercise.
Rules: I am wealthy anytime I receive money, a salary, a bonus or a pay raise; anytime I find money in my wallet; or anytime I give to homeless.
Rules: I am growing anytime I learn something new; anytime I do something new; or anytime I stretch myself beyond my comfort zone.
Rules: I am grateful anytime someone does a nice thing for me; anytime I do a nice thing for others; or anytime I give something to others.
How Else Can You Be Happier?
Using A Contrasting Reference to Appreciate Life Even More
Imagine that you stay in a 4 star hotel. The first scenario is that you are bored and think that this is not a very nice hotel. You then look outside your window on your left and see a dirty hostel. You probably think that you are very lucky and have a better perception of your hotel.
The second scenario is that you are very happy that you stay in this grand hotel. You go out to your balcony, look on your right and see a 5 star resort which you like even more than your hotel. You are highly inspired by its beauty. You probably want to upgrade and stay in that resort. How can the same hotel make you feel differently? It is because of a comparison.
Use contrast to create an alternative feeling and perspective. No matter how bad you think things are in your life, look outside the window and notice that someone has it worse. If you prefer not to take their place, be grateful for what you have and acknowledge how lucky you are.
Be grateful for the past. Enjoy in the present. Be excited about the future. It’s about the way you look at life … again … there is always a great thing in everything. When you change the way you look at thing, the thing you look at changes. Try it now. Think of something in a more amazing way. You can do it. Your happiness depends on it. Do it now!
A Different View That Changes Lives – Steve Jobs
During his speech at Stanford University, Steve Jobs said he was publicly fired at the age of 30 from Apple, which is the company that he founded. He did not know what to do for months. He thought about running away from the valley.
By using contrast, it helped him better interpret what getting fired from Apple really meant. He found that the heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again. It freed him to enter one of the most creative periods of his life. He soon realised that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that ever could have happened to him.
When he used a different reference to change the way he looked at things, the things he looked at changed. And so did his response. His new response to the same experience led to a better life. Instead of running away, he found NeXT which is also known as Pixar. Pixar created the world’s first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. He also fell in love with an amazing woman who later became his wife. He was sure none of this would have happened if he did not get fired from Apple. At the end, Apple wanted him back. He returned to Apple and created products that change lives and make people happier.
